SLA is not a uniform and predictable phenomenon. There is no single way in which learners acquire a second language. Different learners in different situations learn a second language in different ways. Although the variability and individuality of language learning need to be emphasized, the study of SLA assumes interest only if it is possible to identify aspects that are relatively stable and hence generalizable, if not to all learners, then, at least, to large groups of learners.
Attempt to describe and explain the behavior and developing systems of children and adults learning a new language. In general, SLA has not focused on the communicative aspects of language development but on the formal features of language that linguists have traditionally concentrated on.
One of the goals of SLA description of L2 acquisition. Another is explanation : identifying the external and internal factors that account for why learners acquire an L2 in the way they to. One of the external factors is the social milieu in which learning takes place. Another external factor is the input that learners receive, that is , the samples of language to which a learner exposed. The goals of SLA , then , are to describe how L2 acquisition proceeds and to explain this process and why some learners seem to be better at is than others.
